McNeese State University is a public university located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA. Founded in 1939 as a junior college, it became known by its present name in 1970 and is a part of the University of Louisiana System. McNeese is recognized for its excellent engineering program as well as its nursing program. Its creative writing program in English is nationally known for nurturing quality poets and fiction writers. It is the first university in the state of Louisiana to offer a concentration in Forensic Chemistry, and was one of the first schools in the nation to offer a concentration in Terrorism, Preparedness and Security. McNeese is a Carnegie Master's University. McNeese State University was founded in 1939 as a division of Louisiana State University and was originally called Lake Charles Junior College.
