Valparaiso University, known colloquially as Valpo, is a regionally accredited private university located in the city of Valparaiso in the U.S. state of Indiana. Founded in 1859, it consists of five undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and a law school. Valparaiso University is owned and operated by the Lutheran University Association, a non-profit corporation, and is the largest independent Lutheran university in the United States. Valparaiso is located an hour southeast of downtown Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is also 15 miles (24 km) south of Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The 320-acre (1.3 km) campus as well as its main entrance are located off U.S. Highway 30 on the south side of the city and is the site of over sixty buildings and a number of academic resources.
